I don't post enough music here. I like to leave that up to more qualified people with better taste. That being said, I was digging through some old CD's to play for Beck (we're practicing dancing and clapping for this weekend's Rock-n-Romp) when I came upon The Velveteens: Viva. The Velveteens were a William and Mary ska band that gained some traction in the DC area a few years back. They released two albums, went on a small-venue midwest tour, and could have seriously gone places if the people in the band weren't killing time before med school, dental school, and their masters programs.
Because you probably couldn't buy a CD if you wanted to, and because I'm sure they wouldn't mind their music living on via the Internet, I have posted songs from their "Viva" album for your downloading and listening pleasure. Lots of horns, lots of sax, fun stuff that just sort of makes you want to jump around flailing your arms. (Or, me, at least.) There is definitely a college quality to it as they sing about local Williamsburg watering holes, and --I think-- a favorite professor, but one can still hear a good smart kid/band dork talent foundation.

I had a little crush on the lead singer, Wilson Rickerson*. He was cute, talented and frenetic. Apparently he went on to get a Masters in Energy and Environmental Policy and is currently a prius driving sustainable energy expert up in New York.
Don't know why these William and Mary kids can't just dedicate themselves to their art and settle for living out of the back of a van. Who loses? We do, that's who.
*Wilson, if somehow you refer your way back here, I know you're married and all but, Hey! Call ME!
you might like to know that one of the bands playing RnR, the positions, have horns! they're not ska, but more poppy. anyway, i LOVE horns. hopefully it won't be deafening. heh.
